The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) covered 30% of a solar or battery project — for systems placed in service through 2025. Enter your numbers to see what your credit is worth and what you can actually claim.

Informational estimate, not tax advice. The credit is nonrefundable — it offsets tax you owe and any unused amount carries forward. Eligibility and amounts depend on your return; confirm with a tax professional.

What counts toward the credit

What doesn't count

2026 update: the residential credit has ended

The 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit was scheduled to run through 2032, but the 2025 federal budget-reconciliation law moved its end date up. It now applies only to expenditures made on or before December 31, 2025. Homeowners installing in 2026 or later generally cannot claim it.

Businesses use a different credit (Section 48E) with its own rules and timeline — not covered by this calculator. If you're a business, talk to your tax advisor about commercial solar incentives.

State and local incentives still apply. Several states offer their own tax credit, an upfront rebate, or ongoing production payments (SRECs) that the end of the federal credit doesn't touch. The cost calculator and the state pages fold these into the estimate for your state.
