How solar panel installation works

Most residential solar projects take 1 to 3 months from signing to activation. The install day itself is usually just one or two days; the rest is design, permitting and utility approval.

The stages

1. Site assessment & design — the installer confirms roof condition, shading, panel capacity and system layout.
2. Contract & financing — you approve the design, price and payment method.
3. Permitting — the installer submits the building permit and the utility interconnection application.
4. Installation — racking, panels, wiring and inverter go in, typically in 1-2 days.
5. Inspection — the local jurisdiction inspects the work.
6. Permission to operate (PTO) — the utility signs off and swaps the meter if needed. You can turn the system on.

What you should do

• Get more than one quote and compare price per watt, equipment and warranties.
• Confirm licensing and insurance, and read the production guarantee.
• Keep copies of the permit, interconnection agreement and warranty documents.
