How to compare solar companies

"Solar company" covers several very different businesses. Knowing which is which helps you compare quotes.

When people say "solar company" they might mean any of these:

  • Manufacturers make the panels, inverters or batteries. They don't install.
  • Installers design and physically install systems. This is who does the work on your roof.
  • Dealers / sales orgs sell under a brand and subcontract the install.
  • Financiers provide the loan, lease or PPA and often the monitoring and warranty.

Many large "solar companies" are a mix — a brand and financing layer on top of a network of local crews.

Comparison checklist

  • Who actually installs — in-house crews or subcontractors?
  • Price per watt after all fees, cash vs financed.
  • Equipment brands and warranty terms.
  • Licensing and insurance in your state.
  • Who you call for service in year 5.
